This is it! The production version of the DoodleBug Printed Circuit Board (PCB). The DoodleBug has been in various stages of development since mid-to-late 2013 - finally culminating in the design you see here! No other DIY (Do-It-Yourself) USB Isolation and Linear-Regulation design has been vetted as extensively as the DoodleBug. Designed for the Hammond 1455-series C801 case, Beezar also has a custom-machined, anodized, and laser-etched case ready to go for your completed PCB here. Full details for construction of the PCB can be found on the DoodleBug website:

When built, this device provides audiophile-quality USB-power and USB isolation from a Windows, OSX, or Linux OS, regardless of platform. As long as the USB 1.1 or 2.0 standard is met for USB Full Speed transmission, the DoodleBug should be compatible. Primarily designed to improve the performance of any USB-powered DAC (Digital Audio Convertor), it can potentially improve the performance of almost any USB device where quality audio, USB-isolation, or power isolation is desired. Installation is entirely plug-and-play on all major devices using a mini-USB connection and an external walwart. The USB-out connection is a standard female USB-A connector. No additional drivers are required.

The DoodleBug incorporates the following outstanding features:
  • Analog Devices' ADuM3160 USB Isolator chip.
  • The ADuM 3160 provides protection of up to 2500V rms for 1 minute!
  • Transient immunity of over 24kV per micro-second.
  • Power supply is based on the venerable LM317, but uses LED's instead of resistors for the utmost in AC ripple rejection (80dB). Other parts selection and design bring the noise down even further. It is vastly more quiet than any laptop and almost any full-size PC, too.
Most importantly regarding the power supply, the DoodleBug gives you the opportunity to adjust the USB power supply to the maximum that the standard allows - 5.25VDC. This means that no onboard regulators in your USB device are starved for voltage, regardless of the PC's power supply. This allows your USB device to achieve its ultimate performance potential.

Simpler devices will benefit from the quiet power supply and USB isolation. Knock-offs are almost non-existent. Those that occur have more to do with the hand-shaking when you first power up or connect the DoodleBug. After that, the more potential your device has (better design, multiple regulated voltage sources), the more the DoodleBug will improve it. For instance, performance with the PupDAC is simply amazing!

The PCB design is a mix of SMD and through-hole components, but the SMD is large at 1206 and the ADuM chip itself has a very wide pin spacing and uses large pins. We believe that with proper tools and SMD tutorials, it may even be suitable as a first DIY project. Beezar has created one of the most detailed and well-documented websites available for building instructions:

* Electrical testing was done at the PCB manufacturer. This ensures Beezar customers that the PCB's are free of electrical defects (trace shorts, bad vias, etc.).
