Miniature DAC that will blow away the AC97 on a standard PC motherboard in terms of sound quality. Excellent sounding piece of hardware, kudos to its designer Erik Soosalu. The kit comes complete with the parts bagged up and labeled. I had no problem identifying part numbers at all. The step-by-step assembly guide is very detailed and very helpful. Excellent work! The parts in the kit are really tiny, soldering under a magnifying glass is a must! A steady hand and delicate touch are recommended. Soldering the chips and capacitors was most challenging for me. The resistors were actually pretty easy to solder. The fully populated PCB slides easily into the bottom slot of a Hammond 1455C801 enclosure. It will remain a permanent addition to my desktop PC.
Well, this thing is really surprising. Despite the small size and simple circuit design but its performance can meet a hundred dollars of DAC in the market. Small and cheap doesn't mean not good. When connected to my tube amplifier, immediately I can hear the difference. The sound is more airy and open. It is clear and transparent and crisp. No more invisible layer that covers up the sound. Now I am enjoying this GRUB DAC more.
