The Mute Audio SkeletonDAC

Mute Audio has designed a new DAC with the same size layout as the BantamDAC and using the latest chip from Texas Instruments to replace the PCM2702, which TI has declared NRND (Not Reccomended for New Designs) for some time. As a result, the TI PCM2702 is no longer an economical choice for an inexpensive DAC. However, the PCM2704/5/6/7 series replaces the PCM2702 and adds new features, to boot. Mute Audio has designed a new DAC PCB to make use of the PCM2704/5 (28SSOP versions): the SkeletonDAC. It is interchangeable with all of the same uses as the Bantam, but it's also been specifically designed to fit the Hammond 1551HTBU case! When built, this device (DAC) will perform the same function as an off-board stereo sound card from a Windows, OSX, or Linux platform (but quieter and with more high-fidelity than many typical on-board sound cards). Installation is plug and play on all major devices using Windows, OSX, or Linux and using USB-connections. No additional software or programming is required. Full details and building construction may be found on the SkeletonDAC website .

Despite its small size, the SkeletonDAC is a complete, USB-powered version of a DAC circuit, utilizing the onboard 3.3V regulation contained in the PCM2704/5 chip for the greatest economy. In addition, the SkeletonDAC design takes into account the built-in headphone amplifier that exists in the PCM chip. Built in the proper configuration, it is possible to power headphones directly with the SkeletonDAC. Finally, an option exists with the addition of a single isolation transformer to provide a SPDIF output, effectively allowing the SkeletonDAC to serve as a USB-to-SPDIF convertor, in addition to continuing to provide an analog music signal output at the same time.

Like the Bantam before it, the SkeletonDAC's small size allows an option to build as a SkeletonCableDAC. As mentioned above, the built-in headphone amplifier that exists in the PCM2704/5 chip allows the option to build the SkeletonDAC as a SkeletonHeadphoneDAC - details on the SkeletonDAC website!
