  • Mute Audio pupDAC PCB - electrically tested
  • Beezar-produced parts kit

Full DIY building instructions are available on the pupDAC website:

*** New!! Pick & Place, machine-soldered PCM chips now standard! ***
These are the most expensive, most difficult chips to solder on the PCB. Pre-soldering these chips turn the PupDAC kit into a potential beginners kit (caution still advised).

Kit Features:
  • High-quality, 1 oz copper, 0.062" FRP, electrically-tested PCB.
  • Both RCA and 3.5mm jacks included.
  • OPA2836 included as standard pupDAC opamp.
  • No wiring required!
  • Beezar-Hammond custom machined, anodized, and laser-etched case. Hand-tapped for 6-32 cap screws; matching blue-anodized aluminum socket-head cap screws included (4 at 6-32 x 1/2"). No drilling of any sort required!
Technical features:
  • Texas Instruments' Highest Quality DAC chip - the PCM1794, machine-soldered! This chip has a native mono S/N ratio of 130dB!
  • Texas Instruments' PCM2706/7 for USB communication, machine-soldered!
  • Low Voltage Rail-to-Rail Opamp - the LMH6643, OPA2835 (kit basis), and OPA2836 have all been vetted with the pupDAC!
  • No Output Coupling Capacitors - the pupDAC differs from most available DIY-DACs through the use a charge pump invertor. Use of a Texas Instruments TPS60403 provides +and- 2.5V regulated volts to the oamp supply. Only a trivial single resistor is in the output path from the opamp to prevent hiss.
  • Every Voltage Source Is Regulated - no less than 5 Low Drop-Out (LDO) linear regulators are provided on the board for the quietest response and low distortion while using USB power, but use of the DoodleBug USB isolator/power supply is strongly recommended.
When built, this DAC (a Digital Audio Convertor) will perform the same function as an off-board stereo sound card from a Windows, OSX, or Linux platform, but with higher-fidelity and a lower noise-floor than onboard or expansion card sound cards. Installation is entirely plug-and-play on all major devices using a mini-USB connection. No extra power supply, software, or programming is required.

Developed since late 2008 and vetted with two prototype groups, the PupDAC has been sold and successfully supported since 2012. We believe the Mute Audio pupDAC provides unequaled performance in a USB-only-powered DIY DAC.

That said, we strongly recommend pairing the PupDAC with the DoodleBug USB isolator/power supply. The PupDAC excels in its use of numerous onboard regulators. However, no regulator can perform up to its specs with a really bad power supply. Therefore, no USB-powered DAC can ensure quality sound with the complete range of PC and laptop power supplies that are in use. Some are good, but many are bad. The highest quality sound from the PupDAC can be assured with use of the DoodleBug.

Finally, even though the bulk of the work for this kit is SMD, we believe that Beezar Audio has created one of the most detailed and well-documented websites available for building instructions:

I cant' believe I'm the first one to review this wonder!! I wanted to post this review as a thank to the incredible work done by the guys at Beezar.com. I have been involved in DIY products for the last few months, having discovered the immense qualities of few kits on the market. They offer a great simplicity in order to be assembled by hand, and simplicity often conjugates pretty well with sound quality. I started building a few GRUB Dacs for me as a source to my DIY tube preamp, and to my amazement, the sound quality was really fabulous. I offered few of them to my friends and family and it was a real pleasure to see the amazement on their face every time they discovered what a tiny little blue box was capable of. So when Beezar released it's new PUP Dac, I couldn't help but to be among the first to order and build it. I firstly want to underline the immense quality of the work done by Beezar at providing an amazing piece of DIY gear, with superb documentation, super well design circuit, fully tested and qualified by the community, and GOD did I mention the ultra sexy enclosure? So I built my own PUP Dac and fired it up. I have to say that I did a bit of tweaking switching standard (already quite good caps) by some oscons. The result at first listening tests was amazing. I immediately heard new things out of my favorite well known pieces of music. On various ambient samples (footsteps, waterfalls, and this type of sounds), this Dac seems to open a door to reality, it's like having eyes instead of your ears! Really scary thought! On other tests, like earing the quality difference between poor and good MP3 encoding, the poor sound dithering just jumps to your face immediately. You're kind of condemned to use FLAC encoding once you switch to this DAC! I don't know to which level my tweaks improved the already good PUP Dac, but for the overall sounding I would say the following: -Dynamic is quite impressive (but GRUB Dac already had a good one). -Frequencies rendering is linear but never boring. -Bass go super deep and require a good sound system to fully grab their extension. -Mids are super well rendered with voices sparkling with life and presence. -Trebles are quite amazing I have to say. They shine, are super airy and detailed, but are NEVER HARSH. It's quite difficult to reach this result at this level of price. Overall, with my experience in high end products, I certainly believe that this Dac sounds like a 2 to 3 000 USD product out there. The difference is that this little wonder only focuses on what's really important, 16 bits rendering of redbook CD specifications. If you are only interested by higher bits to listen to your MP3, just go to your nearest Fry's and buy a Chinese sweatshop product, but be aware that I'll be munching on your ears next time you'll listen to my sound system!! (please clean them well before visiting!!) ;-) Finally I want to emphasis on the usability of the product. You literally can plug this anywhere and have it to deliver its wonders immediately. It runs on Linux (which I use), Windows, MacOS... I suspect this thing to run on AIX... And god it looks SO GOOD!! Personally I am going to order a few more...

Excellent piece of hardware right here. I bought the pre-soldered kit and for the price I'm more than satisfied. Even if it's not meant to drive most headphones directly it still manages to give my ATH-A900 an amazing sound in quite a minuscule package. Guitars sounds sharp, treble's crispy and bass goes way down. The bass lack a little punch but hey, that's to be expected when you don't really have an amp to give some juice. My only gripe would be that the box had a good bunch on small scratches a bit everywhere, but from afar they aren't really visible at all.

Many thanks for the kind review! Since you posted this review (2014), we've switched to blue-anodized casework sourced directly from Hammond Mfg. Previously, Hammond Mfg only offered anodizing in black and clear. There are still some parallel lines and streaks visible in the finish, but this is inherent in Hammond's extrusion process and has always existed even with their black and clear casework. The pupDAC casework now available is as good as it gets - directly from Hammond Mfg.
